It is a crucial time for live music in Australia. There is increasing recognition of this sector’s cultural, social and economic importance, motivating policy development at all levels of government.
Meanwhile, the sector faces challenges including:
· economic insecurity for workers and businesses;
· complex and overlapping regulation;
· technology-driven reconfiguration of the music industries;
· adaptation to environmental crises and sustainable practices; and
· cultural change with respect to diversity, inequality, safety and well-being.
This research project investigates the issues shaping the future of live music in Australia, with attention to different interests and perspectives within the sector. Research methods include interviews with a diverse range of live music stakeholders, and analysis of secondary materials (proposals, reports) published about and on behalf of the live music sector.
The aim of this research project is to advance awareness and understanding of the Australian live music sector, support evidence-based policy and action in government and industry, and guide further research. Planned outputs include a public report of findings, scholarly publications and a project symposium.
